What we do

A bathroom is a small room with a lot of water in it. What decides how long it lasts is the waterproofing, the shower floor slope and the fan.

Option 01

Tub-to-shower conversion

Out with the tub, in with a shower you can step into. A low or curbless threshold can change the floor framing and the drain, which makes it more than dropping in a shower base.

Option 02

Full gut

Back to the studs: waterproofing behind the tile, a shower floor sloped to the drain, new fixtures and a fan that pulls wet air out of the house.

Option 03

Accessible bathroom

A step-in shower and low threshold for someone who can no longer climb over a tub wall. If access is the reason, read our accessibility page as well.

Our process

How the job runs

01

Free visit, written quote

We look at the room and what’s staying, then give you a written quote that says how soft subfloor or rot around the drain gets priced if we find it.

02

Schedule and permits

We set the schedule and apply for the municipal plumbing permit. New circuits, a heated floor or a fan circuit go through our licensed electrical partner under Technical Safety BC.

03

The build

Our crew and trusted trade partners handle demolition, waterproofing and tile, and licensed trades do the regulated electrical work. The bathroom is out of use while the work and inspections run.

04

Final walkthrough

We walk the finished room with you, run the fan and the shower, and go through the contract item by item.

Steam, old houses and what’s behind the tile

The fan duct should exhaust outside, through a wall or roof cap, and not into the attic, where the moisture can condense on cold sheathing. We size the fan for the room and tell you whether it runs on a timer or a humidity switch.

In houses built before 1990, old tile, flooring and wall finishes may hide asbestos. WorkSafeBC tells homeowners to test before renovating, and only licensed people can remove it. We get the test done early so a small bathroom job doesn’t stall halfway.

Bathroom permits

Plumbing permits are issued by your municipality, and the City of Victoria lists them as their own application type. We handle that application. New circuits, a heated floor or a new fan circuit fall under Technical Safety BC: only qualified people employed by licensed electrical contractors can do that work, and most of it needs a permit, which our licensed electrical partner pulls.

Paperwork varies a lot from city to city. A January 2024 CFIB report found that a bathroom renovation in Vancouver needed more permit documents than in any other city it compared. We leave time for that before your start date.

  • Plumbing permit: from your municipality, and we apply for it.
  • Electrical: our licensed electrical partner pulls the Technical Safety BC permit.
  • Pre-1990 house: asbestos test before demolition.

Questions to ask any contractor

Ask us these too.

  1. What waterproofing system do you use behind tile, and do you flood-test the shower before tiling?
  2. How will you size the fan and vent it to the outside?
  3. Who pulls the plumbing permit?
  4. If you find rot under the floor or tub, how will you price the repair?
  5. Can you show me photos of a shower you finished a few years ago and tell me how it has held up?

Bathroom renovations: common questions

Plumbing permits are issued by your municipality, and regulated electrical work needs a permit under Technical Safety BC rules. We check your scope with your city’s permit office and line up what applies.

It depends on what is under the tub and whether the drain moves. Your written quote includes a timeline that allows for inspections and the time the tile setting materials need.

Yes. You sign one contract with Island Strong. Our crew and trusted trade partners do the work under our management, and licensed trades do the regulated electrical work.
