Painting & drywall

What we do

A paint quote is mostly a prep quote. Washing, scraping, filling, sanding, priming and caulking take longer than the coats, and decide how long the finish lasts.

Option 01

Interior painting

Rooms prepped, primed and painted, with the prep steps, the products by name and the number of coats written into the quote so you know what you are getting.

Option 02

Exterior painting

Stucco, cedar siding or board-and-batten, washed, scraped and primed before the coats go on. We find what’s causing peeling at trim, flashings and board ends before we quote.

Option 03

Drywall repair

A stained ceiling after a leak, a hole behind a door, cracks along an old renovation seam. Patches get primed and painted with the rest of the wall so they disappear.

Our process

How the job runs

01

Free visit, written quote

We look at the surfaces and the age of the building, then list the prep steps, products by name and number of coats in a written quote.

02

Testing and schedule

In a pre-1990 house, we test before anyone sands or cuts into walls. For exteriors, we set weather rules and plan for a run of wet days mid-job.

03

Prep and paint

Our crew or trade partners wash, scrape, fill, sand, prime and caulk, then put on the coats. Old lead-based paint in the CRD goes to the Hartland depot.

04

Final walkthrough

We walk the rooms or the outside of the house with you and touch up anything on the list before the job is closed.

Built for the coast

Exterior paint on a wet coast

Stucco bungalows, cedar-sided character homes and 1990s board-and-batten each take paint differently, and each one fails in its own way once water gets behind the finish. Peeling at window trim, flashings and the bottoms of boards has a cause, and we look for it before we quote.

If paint keeps failing on the same wall, the cause may be moisture in the wall itself. That’s an envelope question, and our siding page covers it. Painting over a wet wall only buys time.

Lead, asbestos and old walls

In a house built before 1990, we test before anyone sands or demolishes existing walls. WorkSafeBC says homes of that age likely contain asbestos in at least some materials, and anyone hired to deal with it must be licensed for that work in BC.

Lead-based paint is a separate hazard. In the Capital Region, the CRD accepts it as household hazardous waste at the Hartland depot.

  • Pre-1990 house: test before sanding or cutting into walls.
  • Asbestos work: licensed people only.
  • Old lead-based paint in the CRD: Hartland depot.

Questions to ask any contractor

Ask us these too.

  1. What prep is included: washing, scraping, priming, caulking?
  2. Which product, by name, and how many coats?
  3. In a pre-1990 house, how will you handle possible lead paint or asbestos in the drywall?
  4. For exterior work, what are your weather rules?
  5. If the paint peels, what will you do about it, for how long, and is that in writing?

Painting & drywall: common questions

We price your actual job, free, after a site visit, in a written quote. Prep, surface condition and product drive the cost, and we show them as separate lines.

The CRD accepts lead-based paint as household hazardous waste at the Hartland depot.

In a pre-1990 house, yes. WorkSafeBC tells homeowners to test before renovating, and asbestos removal must be done by licensed people.
