Fences

What we do

Fence jobs turn on the height your zoning allows, where the property line sits and how the posts go in. Material and style come after those.

Option 01

Replace an old fence

Old fence out, new one in on the same line. We check the height limit, and how the new posts will be set and protected where they meet the ground.

Option 02

New fence line

A new run where none stood. If the line is in doubt, a survey settles it before posts go in. A shared fence means talking to your neighbour early.

Option 03

Gates

A heavy gate on a light post sags, so gates get posts sized for them. If you need one wide enough for a car or a trailer, say so up front.

Our process

How the job runs

01

Site visit, written quote

We walk the line, note slopes, big trees and shared sections, and quote length, height, material and gates in writing.

02

Zoning and permits

We check your zoning bylaw for height, and any permit or variance, before materials are ordered. Tell your neighbour early: hearing it first from the crew is a harder conversation.

03

Posts, panels, gates

Our crew sets the posts to resist rot, steps or rakes the fence down slopes, and hangs the gates. If a slope needs a retaining wall, that is in the quote too.

04

Final walkthrough

We walk the fence with you, check the line and the height, and swing every gate before the job is closed.

Built for the coast

Built for the coast

Many coast lots slope, so the fence has to step or rake down the hill, and some jobs need a retaining wall. Walls over 1.2 m need a permit in Saanich and in Nanaimo, where an engineer is also required.

In Victoria, digging post holes in a protected tree’s root zone may need a permit under the Tree Protection Bylaw. If a big tree sits on or near the line, tell us before we quote.

Height limits vary by town

Fence height is a zoning matter, and each municipality sets its own limits. North Saanich requires a permit only for fences over 2 m. Vancouver publishes a bulletin on over-height fences in front yards. In Victoria, a 2024 Board of Variance case shows that side-yard fences can need a relaxation.

We couldn’t confirm Victoria’s height figures, so we check the City’s zoning bylaw for your lot before materials are ordered.

  • Height: we check your zoning bylaw.
  • North Saanich: permit only for fences over 2 m.
  • Vancouver: separate rules for over-height front-yard fences.
  • Victoria: side-yard fences can need a variance.

Questions to ask any contractor

Ask us these too.

  1. What is the maximum height here, and who checks the zoning?
  2. How will you set the posts to resist rot?
  3. Who confirms the property line, and do we need a survey?
  4. Who talks to the neighbour about a shared fence?
  5. What happens if a post fails?

Fences: common questions

It depends on height and municipality. North Saanich, for example, requires a permit only for fences over 2 m. We check your zoning bylaw before materials are ordered.

We could not confirm Victoria’s figures, so we check the City’s zoning bylaw for your lot. A 2024 Board of Variance case shows side-yard fences can need a relaxation.

We do, before materials are ordered. Height limits differ from one town to the next.

In Victoria, work in a protected tree’s root zone may need a permit. Protected trees are generally over 30 cm in diameter.
