Insulation & energy upgrades

What we do

The R-value you’ll end up with goes in writing. An energy assessment before any work can show where the house loses the most heat.

Option 01

Attic insulation and sealing

The usual starting point, because it’s open and reachable. Air sealing goes with it and changes how the attic breathes, so we keep the attic ventilation working.

Option 02

Wall insulation

Harder, because the cavities are closed. It makes most sense when the siding or drywall is coming off for another reason, so we plan it with that work.

Option 03

Crawlspace work

Crawlspaces bring moisture and drainage into the job. If the crawlspace is wet, we check whether drainage needs work before anything gets sealed in.

Our process

How the job runs

01

Free visit, written quote

We look at the attic, walls and crawlspace, note how the house is heated and put the target R-value in a written quote.

02

Testing and scheduling

In a pre-1990 house, old insulation is tested for asbestos before anyone disturbs it, and removal is done by licensed people. Then we set the dates.

03

The work

Our crew and trusted trade partners insulate and air seal, keeping ventilation working and vapour moving out. Wall work fits best when siding or drywall is already off.

04

Final walkthrough

We walk the finished areas with you and confirm the R-value against the written quote.

Built for the coast

Insulation changes how a coast house dries

Adding insulation changes how walls and attics handle moisture. CMHC’s guide to wood-frame envelopes in coastal BC covers the moisture control this climate needs. We plan each job to keep vapour moving out and ventilation working, especially in an older house that has never been insulated to current levels.

Crawlspace encapsulation is a common search in Victoria. If the crawlspace is wet, we look at drainage before anything gets sealed in.

Asbestos and rebates

WorkSafeBC says pre-1990 homes likely contain asbestos in at least some materials. We test old insulation before anyone disturbs it, and removal must be done by licensed people.

As of October 2026, the CleanBC Home Renovation Rebate includes insulation installed by a program-registered contractor, with applications due within six months of the upgrade. Income-qualified insulation rebates changed on July 6, 2026. Better Homes BC says its site isn’t being updated during the provincial election period, so check the program page before you plan around a rebate. The federal Greener Homes Grant is closed.

  • Pre-1990 house: test old insulation before removal.
  • Rebate (as of October 2026): use a program-registered contractor.
  • Rebate applications due within six months of the upgrade (as of October 2026).

Questions to ask any contractor

Ask us these too.

  1. Are you CleanBC-registered, and will you handle the rebate application?
  2. Will you test the existing insulation for asbestos?
  3. How will you keep attic ventilation working after air sealing?
  4. What R-value will I end up with?
  5. Do you recommend an energy assessment first?

Insulation & energy upgrades: common questions

As of October 2026, the CleanBC Home Renovation Rebate covers insulation installed by a program-registered contractor. Check the Better Homes BC program page before you rely on it.

In a pre-1990 house, yes. WorkSafeBC tells homeowners to test before renovating, and removal needs licensed people. We test before anything is disturbed.

As of October 2026, most CleanBC Home Renovation Rebates need a program-registered contractor. Check the Better Homes BC program page for the insulation rules before you start.

No. NRCan says the Grant is closed and the Loan is closed to new approvals.
