Electrical

What we do

A lot of today’s electrical work comes from adding big loads: a heat pump, an EV charger or an induction range can push a house past what its panel carries.

Option 01

Panel and service upgrades

A load calculation tells you whether you need a bigger service. A service upgrade may bring BC Hydro into the job, and we fit that into the schedule.

Option 02

EV chargers and new circuits

New circuits for an EV charger, an induction range, a heat pump or lighting, checked against the panel first so one decision covers everything you’re planning.

Option 03

Rewiring older houses

Rewiring means opening walls and ceilings. The quote states whether patching and painting are included, and how older wiring found mid-job will be handled and priced.

Our process

How the job runs

01

Free visit, load calculation

We look at the panel, the house and what you’re adding. A load calculation from our licensed electrical partner sets the scope in a written quote.

02

Permit and schedule

The licensed electrical contractor pulls the permit before work starts. If a service upgrade involves BC Hydro, we book it into the schedule.

03

The work

Licensed electricians do the regulated work under our management, with declarations after each phase of work or every 180 days. Patching is done as quoted.

04

Inspection and walkthrough

Any inspection is arranged under the permit. Then we walk the finished work with you, circuit by circuit, against the quote.

Older houses, new loads

Postwar bungalows and 1970s houses across Victoria and Vancouver were wired before heat pumps and EVs were common. If you’re adding either, we start with a load calculation before choosing equipment, and look at both at once so the panel decision covers everything you’re planning.

As of October 2026, we found no rebate for a service upgrade on BC Hydro’s heating rebate page. Check with BC Hydro before you plan around one.

Who does the work

Technical Safety BC is plain about it: by law, only qualified individuals employed by licensed contractors can do regulated electrical work. Ours is done by licensed electrical trade partners under our management, and the licensed contractor pulls the permit before work starts. Declarations are required after each phase of work, or every 180 days.

A homeowner permit is only open to a sole owner and sole occupant of a single detached house; a suite, an attached home or a business on site means a licensed contractor. Since January 1, 2023, licensed electrical contractors must show their licence number on all digital advertising, and Technical Safety BC runs a search tool where you can check it.

  • Regulated work: licensed electrical trade partner, under our management.
  • Permit before work starts, pulled by the licensed contractor.
  • Ask us for the Technical Safety BC licence number, and check it on TSBC’s licensed contractor search.
  • House with a suite: licensed contractor required.

Questions to ask any contractor

Ask us these too.

  1. Who holds the Technical Safety BC licence for the electrical work, and what is the number?
  2. Who pulls the permit and arranges any inspection?
  3. Do I need a service upgrade, and does BC Hydro need to be involved?
  4. What’s included if you open walls: patching, painting?
  5. How do you handle older wiring found during the job?

Electrical: common questions

Only as the sole owner and sole occupant of a single detached home. A suite, an attached home or a business on site means a licensed contractor must do the work.

Technical Safety BC says most regulated electrical work needs a permit before it starts, and the licensed contractor pulls it. On our jobs, that’s our licensed electrical partner.

As of October 2026, we found none on BC Hydro’s heating rebate page. Check with BC Hydro before you plan around one.

Use Technical Safety BC’s licensed contractor search. TSBC says contractors not listed may not have an active licence and are not authorized to do regulated work. Ask us for our partner’s number and check it.
